What is Sleep Apnea? Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is a potentially serious sleep disorder in which breathing repeatedly stops and starts depriving your body of a steady flow of oxygen. With OSA, the airway has collapsed or is blocked which pauses your breathing, creating shallow breathing. Obstructive sleep apnea also causes snoring as the air squeezes past the blockage. These pauses lead to low oxygen levels, disrupted sleep, fatigue during the day, problems with concentration and memory. If left untreated, sleep apnea can lead to heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, and irregular heartbeat.
